For the longest time, I’ve thought that you ought to be able to make a good puzzle game out of the act of traffic control. Imagine my surprise when I found just such a game on XBox Live Indie Games last week, Carcophony.

Gameplay is simple to grasp and reminiscent of the arcade classic, Tapper (albeit slower and more complex). Cars enter the map and you have to control traffic lights to get them through. If too many cars get backed up at a single entrance, you lose. Periodically, special events like ambulances & blocked roads occur to spice things up.

There are five maps to chose from. In addition to the single player game, Carcophony supports local multipayer games in both cooperative and competitive flavors for up to 4 players. Peer-to-peer scoreboards and achievement-like “License Points” round out the package.

At 400 MS points, Carcophony is more expensive than some games, but you’re getting a fun and unique game for your money.

On October 22, all XBox Live Indie games that were previously at 200 MS points and had not been changed by their creators automatically dropped down to 80 MS points. In honor of this, I present to you 10 Indie Games (that were not made by me, sorry Epiphany in Spaaace!) that are well worth the 80 points.

I MAED A GAM3 W1TH ZOMB1ES!!!1 – The song is hilarious and it’s a pretty solid dual-stick shooter to boot.

Miner Dig Deep – Dig for minerals to make money so that you can buy new equipment that lets you dig even deeper. Funner than it sounds.

Fishing Girl – Miner Dig Deep but with fishing. Easy to beat but has lots of goals to shoot for that extend gameplay time if you’re so inclined.

NextWar: The Quest for Earth – Fun tower defense game with a War Games-esque look.

Groov – Dual stick shooter that makes music as you play.

Johnny Platform’s Biscuit Romp – Enjoyable retro platformer with vertical design.

CaveIn – Miner Rescue Team (80 MS) – A fun Action/Puzzle game where you rescue people in a cave.

Rabid Gophers – Mindless but enjoyable twitch game.

Halfbrick Echoes – It’s like Pac-Man meets Braid. One of the best little games on the 360 at any price.

Zoomaroom – The controls take a little getting used to but other than that, this is an excellent physics-based puzzle/platformer.

banana split
Banana Split is a decent no-frills single-screen platformer. The graphics are decent; the controls are decent; the levels are decent; the length is decent; the price is decent. Everything’s decent. Therein lies the problem.

Decent isn’t enough. Ever since pioneers like Pitfall! and Super Mario Bros., the platforming genre has been one of the most popular gaming genres out there. There are literally thousands of platformers to choose from, many of them free online. Even on XBox Live Indie Games, you have better choices like Arkedo Series – 001 Jump! and Johnny Platform’s Biscuit Romp (which at 80 MS points is also cheaper) and if you move up to XBLA, you have the fantastic N+ & Splosion Man. In a genre so heavily saturated, decent is no longer acceptable.

Banana Split is certainly nothing to be ashamed of as a developer and I look forward to seeing their next project. It’s definitely worth downloading the demo to see if its traditional platforming style clicks with you more than it did for me. If nothing else, the banana man protagonist is mildly amusing.

Echoes+

Echoes+ is essentially Asteroids: Retro Evolved. If you have any love for the shmup genre at all, you need to buy it ASAP. There, review over.

Not convinced yet? Here are ten reasons why Echoes+ is the best shmup on XBox Live Indie games and quite possibly the best shmup on the entire service.

1. Graphics – Tons of enemies + Cool special effects = One pretty game. Sure, if you’ve played the Geometry Wars games, it’s nothing you haven’t seen before, but looking as good as the gorgeous Geometry Wars series is still quite the accomplishment.

2. Control – There’s nothing that ruins a shmup faster than poor controls. Thankfully, poor controls are nowhere to be found here. Movement and firing are both responsive and that’s really all you can ask for.

3. Accessibility – With a number of difficulties to choose from and an absence of the dreaded one-hit kill (outside of survivor mode), Echoes+ is playable by anyone regardless of their skill level.

4. Interface – Looking away from the action for even a second can mean death in a fast paced shmup, but not to worry. Just by looking at your ship, you can quickly gauge your health (the bigger the aura, the more health) and your remaining bombs (shown on your ship’s tail).

5. Modes – Besides the standard mode, there’s also a time attack mode, a survivor mode, a classic mode, and two other modes that each focus on a specific enemy type. There isn’t as much variety as Geometry Wars 2′s six mode setup, but it’s still very nice.

6. Pacing – Things start out easy but the action ramps up quickly enough to prevent boredom from ever becoming an issue. Before long, you’ll be telling your eyes to stop blinking just in an attempt to keep up with everything that’s happening on screen.

7. Goals – Like the official achievements that Indie Games can’t have, Echoes+ has various optional goals (called Zoots) to shoot for. Not only are there a ton of these optional tasks to achieve, but the game also keeps track of the highest difficulty level for each Zoot that you gain.

8. Strategic – Since asteroids break up into smaller pieces, shooting haphazardly is going to get you in one chaotic mess very quickly.

9. Replayability – See #3, #5, and #7.

10. Price – At 240 MS points, it’s less than a third of the price of your average XBLA shmup while still being of similar quality to their more expensive offerings. Why haven’t you bought this game yet?
