Things are still a bit slow in the video game kickstarter world, but they’re starting to pick up. We have one relatively high profile project in the form of Akaneiro: Demon Hunters. Created by American McGee, one of the few developers (with Sid Meier) whose name frequently shows up in the titles of the games he makes, and Spicy Horse, Akaneiro: Demon Hunter appears to be a Diablo-style Action/RPG that is based on Japanese folklore and the story of Little Red Riding Hood. The game has a cool Okami-esque art style and looks to be mostly done, however I think this project will have a hard time reaching funding due to the reward tiers. Most kickstarters get a large percentage of their funding from people looking to essentially buy the game but Akaneiro is a free-to-play game. Unlike some other free-to-play projects that have gone up on the site, the Akaneiro kickstarter reward tiers give very little in-game credit for donating which I think is going to end up hurting their success chances in a large way. They have $9k of their $200k goal raised so far with 29 days to go.
Another project that I thought was interesting is DREADLINE. Created by various industry veterans, Dreadline is another Diablo-style Action/RPG albeit with a party. The premise is an unusual one – you control a band of time travelling monsters who kill people in situations where they were going to die anyway like being on the Titanic right before it crashes. A fun cel-shaded look rounds out the package. They’re looking for $167k and they have $7k raised with 27 days to go.
Finally, here’s a project that looks fun and educational. Tornado Maker teaches the player about how tornados work while also letting them have fun destroying things (or rescuing people from being destroyed). They’re up to $52k of their $75k goal with 4 days left to go so this is going to be a close one.
