Zeboyd Games is pleased to announce that the Cthulhu Saves the World + Breath of Death VII combo pack ($3) has sold over 100,000 copies on Steam since its release on July 13th, 2011. This milestone was achieved during the Steam Halloween sale, less than 4 months after the game’s release on Steam.
In contrast, on the XBox Live Indie Games (XBLIG) service, Zeboyd Games has sold over 20,000 copies of Cthulhu Saves the World (240 MS points = $3) and over 55,000 copies of Breath of Death VII (80 MS points = $1). Cthulhu Saves the World was released in December 2010 on XBLIG and Breath of Death VII was released in April 2010.
We are ecstatic at the amount of success we’ve seen since releasing our games on the PC. The days of worrying over whether or not we could support our families while making games we would want to play ourselves are behind us. Counter-intuitive though it may be, there is obviously a definite audience for quality console-style RPGs that are aggressively priced on the PC.
We are very appreciative of all the support we’ve received from our fans and from Steam and hope to continue making quality games at low prices for you to enjoy for years to come. We are very excited to be working on Rainslick Precipice of Darkness episode 3 in conjunction with Penny Arcade and hope you have a blast with it when it comes out in 2012. And beyond 2012, we have many intriguing ideas for new games that we think you’ll enjoy, both RPGs as well as games from other genres.
Wow, this is great news! Breath of Death VII: The Beginning (lol) was the game that inspired me to make an XBox live indie RPG. Anyone that enjoyed Final Fantasy 1-5, Dragon Warrior, or any other 8-bit/16-bit rpg will enjoy Breath of Death/Cthulhu saves the world. It’s very well thought out and humorous. I wish the XBox live market did more to promote these games…
How hard was it to convert an XNA game for XBox to one that Steam would accept? Did it remain an XNA game but just for windows, or was more required?
“The days of worrying over whether or not we could support our families while making games we would want to play ourselves are behind us.”
This is the best sentence I have read this year!! You more than deserve it and we more than deserve more great quality rpgs 🙂
Congrats guys, you earned it! Also pleased it’s done so well on steam for you. Looking forward to what you do next!
Congratulations =)
Is the penny arcade game your making coming out on consoles?
Also, I hope you aren’t planning on abandoning xbox. The way you seem to focus entirely on steam and the way you used xbox sales as a negative compared to steam doesn’t exactly give us console gamers hope in your continued support of our preferred platform. I sincerely hope you continue releasing games on xbox as well as computer in the future, since you have practice with both platforms now, and a dedicated fan base on both. You may not of made as much money on xbox as you did steam, but you did make cash, and you also have to take into account that the only reason your game did so well on steam in such a short time is due to fans of your xbox games, which includes reviewers on many major gaming sites, and the non reviewers promoting word of mouth that your games are da bomb.
That’s fantastic! Congrats to all of you. It’s a great game, lots of fun to play and I’ve recommended to plenty of people. 🙂
Hey Zeboyd, this is what happens when developers stop bothering with piracy, they stop their bitching and crying, and just concentrate on selling a great game to legitimate customers. Well done on the game sales! Will be watching out for your next release, and don’t forget that a shitload of people pirated your game, but on the flip side, your marketing and aggressive pricing worked and a shitload of people bought your game.
You got props from Total Biscuit around Halloween. He was thoroughly amused by the opening of Cthulu Saves the World. I was at least one of the people pestering him to review it once it was up on Steam, no idea how many there were.
Well done, gents. You deserve every penny.
I’m so proud of you guys at Zeboyd Games! I’m Glad that I helped out with the PC beta.
I just finished Breath of Death and now I’m playing Cthulhu Saves the World. You guys really deserve the success. (oops please delete original)
Oh yeah. I love the Dev Commentary. I hope there will be dev commentaries in the later titles.
