When a developer releases a game on XBox Live Indie Games, Microsoft gives them 50 free download codes to use as they wish in promoting the game. As fate would have it, the 50 download codes that we’re going to receive for Cthulhu Saves the World are almost all accounted for. Some are going to individuals who covered or reviewed Breath of Death VII. Some are going to new websites that are just starting out and others are going to well established sites with huge readerships. Some are going out as signs of gratitude to individuals who have helped us out and there are even a few that are dedicated to charity.

Since we’re getting low on available codes, we are unfortunately going to have to become more selective in how we distribute the last dozen or so codes that haven’t been reserved yet. If you are a review or editor from a big gaming website or magazine who would like to review Cthulhu Saves the World, give me an email and I’ll be sure to reserve a code for you. Otherwise, I’m afraid you’re out of luck.

I apologize in advance to every small, high quality sites that we’re going to have to overlook (including a few good XBLIG devoted sites). I wish we had another 50 or even 100 codes that we could give out so that I could make sure that every quality game review site that wanted a copy could get one, but unfortunately we’re stuck with the 50 code limit and have to live with it.

Of course, this only applies to the last dozen or so codes. The dozens of people who have already been promised codes are set – we’re not going to give your code away to someone else just because they represent a bigger website than you do.

Despite the sadness that we can’t give codes out to every good website that requests one, I must say that this situation fills me with quite a good deal of hope. With Breath of Death VII, we had a few extra codes lying around for months after release. With Cthulhu Saves the World, we’re almost out of codes and we haven’t even released the game’s trailer yet. Quite the difference and it makes me quite optimistic about how Cthulhu Saves the World will do on the marketplace. Now, all we have to do is get it ready for release! Coding, ho!

EDIT: Just to clarify, NO CODES HAVE BEEN SET YET. We don’t get the codes to send out until the game passes peer review (which won’t be for a few weeks since we haven’t entered playtesting yet). When I say that the 50 codes are almost all accounted for, I mean that we have a list of people who we are planning on sending codes to and this list is up to about 40 individuals and websites already.

  1. I’ll probably be doing the same thing for Cthulu that I did for BoD7 as far as analyzing the mechanics and compiling stats on the PCs. Here’s hoping it is a fun experience.

  2. I’m not bold enough to assume that TwoFedoras.com is on the list, but if by some odd chance it is, I’d just assume buy CSTW instead. So feel free to take us off if we are on it…not that I think we are…or anything.

  3. That’s quite a big difference. Good job. I’m pretty sure any of the people that would like a code, but can’t; will buy CSTW anyway. My points are already locked away for this.
