Praise for Penny Arcade’s On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 3:

Review from Wired
”It’s filled with quality. The writing is laugh-out-loud funny at times, the enemies and their behaviors are creative and surprising and the class-change system is great fun to mess around with. It’s like Final Fantasy V on steroids.”

Review from IGN
8 out of 10-Great
“Distills the humorous melodrama and razor-sharp wit from Rain-Slick’s 3D entries, and then fuses it with stellar Super NES-era pixel art, all without losing an atom of the sharp wit, detailed Lovecraft-ian lore, and goofy melodrama that make the series special.”
“In the process of mimicking the past, Penny Arcade evolves beyond its own history to earn a newer, better RPG identity.”
“The third episode of Penny Arcade Adventures looks and plays different than its predecessors, and the new direction is one worth rallying behind. ..the smarter combat and more elaborate encounters keep battles entertaining while the witty, long-form comedy keeps the overly dramatic story light and fun. Unless you’re allergic to nostalgia, there’s no reason not to play Rain-Slick.”
“The terrific sense of humor and retro stylings work together well.”
“Awesome, highly-detailed pixel art creates a cool world.”
“Simple though it starts, the complex combat stays interesting, challenging, and surprising throughout.”

Review from 1Up
A-
“Example of how dated graphics can be mixed with smart, forward-thinking design to create a thoroughly modern game.”

Review from Gamesradar
4 out of 5
“High on charm. Writer Holkins and the game’s artists imbue the characters with chemistry, making their interactions come to life with just text and lightly animated character portraits.”
“Rain-Slick 3 is an easy choice for anyone with an appreciation for turn-based combat and a good Cthulhu reference.”

Review from RPGamer
4 out of 5 – Great
“The classes themselves are all brilliantly designed, some exhibiting a witty reimagining of classic archetypes, while others throw archetypes away entirely in favor of completely new ideas.”
“Combat gleam(s) with forward-thinking design, streamlining certain archaic aspects of RPGs to keep things fast-paced and fun.”
“The humor and terrific class system make it a great choice for fans of Penny Arcade and classic RPGs alike.”

Review from the Examiner
“Rain-Slick Precipice 3 is 16-bit bliss”
“A 16-bit nostalgiagasm loaded with offbeat humor and absolutely insane abilities and encounters.“

Review from Snackbar Games
5/5
“If you like the oddball hijinks that Gabe and Tycho get into in the Penny Arcade comics, then this is the game for you. If you also happen to like classic RPGs, then it’s a match made in heaven.
“A fully-featured RPG with beautiful graphics, great writing, and fun mechanics“

  1. @tibialgnu53:

I can’t tell whether you’re serious, but the combat animations in this game are lightning-fast – probably less than a second in every case I can recall. You really do not need to skip them.

  2. you guys really hit the ground running with this one, plus the penny arcade involvement will boost you guys from that company that made that cthulhu game to a underdog achiver in the rpg market but i have one question is it possible to have a cthulhu saves the world sequel perhaps cthulhu saves the universe!

    anyway great job

  3. Doesn’t work for me on Windows 7 x64. Nor is Cthulhu, your previous game. Even though they did on my other PC which uses Windows XP SP3. Both have similar error and crash after intro screen (Rainslick after your logo, Cthulhu after full quirky name of the game). Same problem as the guy here:

Here is the error. Excuse me for such… strange form, the only way I managed to extract it:

Now, for “typical solutions” I googled before posting. Media Player 10 – installed, working, dll’s are in right place. .NET – installed from file provided in game folder, after uninstalling previous version and registry cleaning. Did restart after both uninstalling and installing too. XNA – same as above. Running as administrator – didn’t help. Compatibility with XP – didn’t help. Checking for integrity – didn’t help, though in case of Cthulhu it consistently finds one “problem” file and downloads it. In case of Rainslick – doesn’t find a thing, clean install. Direct X – 11 and latest. Video/Audio drivers – latest version, videocard GTX460, without any sort of extensive tinkering. Trying to force using one core out of 6 (AMD 1090T) didn’t help either. Would really like some input on my problem. Greatly enjoyed Cthulhu and would like to play it on this PC too. Not mentioning new game. Both games are bought from Steam.

  4. Can you skip animations in combat? i am afraid to buy it otherwise, it might become boring having to watch the same animations over and over again.

  5. I’m excited to buy this for PC but want to know if it supports a gamepad for a controller–specifically an Xbox360 controller I use on my PC. Anyone know?

  6. Beat it! Cannot recommend this game enough, five dollars is an incredible steal for a game that lasted me 18 hours from start to finish(bosses are tough on insane), and there’s still some more content to go. Would have liked a ‘free play’ after the games end to gather up everything so I don’t have to go rebeat the boss when I get a clear but all in all it was great!

A couple issues, compared to the other games there was much less stat transparency, which attacks did what and when and for how long and which abilities conflicted. Sometimes it was a nominal issue but when I’m trying to know the effect and duration of abilities (do all buffs last the entire fight? What about from Buffz)

I hope you guys release some behind the scenes stuff like you did for Breath of Death.

  7. I would probably sell better if it was released after the great summer steam sale that is expected to start soon. I would have bought it, but as of now I’m saving every penny for the sale.

  8. Great news! I’ve played this game for over 12 hours so far (Insane mode is a real slog) and have nothing but glowing praise for it.

Can’t help but think it would have sold better on steam if you charged 8 dollars and made it 5 for the launch week, hahaha.
