Hey everyone!  Bill here.

Been going from one super busy thing to the next.  Last week was PAX, this week I’m trying to catch up on maps since the PAX-break.

So this week I decided to do another Persona fan art – Chie Satonaka!

Chie Satonaka - Persona 4 (by Bill Stiernberg) - click for larger versions

Chie Satonaka - Persona 4 (by Bill Stiernberg) - click for larger versions

Chie from Persona 4 – She has a bright and upbeat personality, often trying to cheer up the group by joking about the case. She is also obsessed with kung fu and is a huge fan of martial arts movies.

She’s a pretty popular Persona character, and was really fun to draw.   Tried to give her a dynamic pose, since she’s always running around or doing kung fu or something.

I also simplified the way I draw and color hair.  Basically I draw the major strands, add a few extra line art strands, and then handle the rest of by drawing the overall shadows and then putting in regular colors and highlights in to represent other strands.  I rather like the results and it’s not very difficult, so I’m going to keep with that for  a while.

Anyway, I’ll be busy as heck ’til Rainslick4 comes out, but I’m thinking about doing a Fire Emblem Awakening fan art next since I’ve been playing that game and it’s incredibly fun.

Hey again everyone!  Bill Stiernberg here.

So with PAX coming up SOON, SO SOON… I only had time to toss together a quick little drawing.

I have a few requests of various characters in my “queue,” like Yog Modaigh, but those will take longer.. so maybe after PAX.

For now, I present, Chibi Moira! Obviously inspired by Etrian Odyssey style.

Just felt like doing something fairly simple-ish or at least somewhat quick.  This is the result!

It’s not totally cleaned up or polished, but alas, I have Rainslick making to do.

I’ll explore this style more down the line.  Thanks for checking it out!

OK back to making games.

Hello again, Bill Stiernberg here, and welcome back to the Weekly Art article!

I’ve been getting a number of requests to do Phantasy Star artwork, so I drew up Alys Brangwin.  I also received a funny and well-done CSTW fan art a few days ago that must be shared :).  Lastly, I got a request to post a .gif of the Dude on a Walrus enemy from RS3 for use as a forum avatar, so I obliged.

Alys Brangwin - Phantasy Star IV (by Bill Stiernberg) (click for larger size images)

Alys Brangwin - Phantasy Star IV (by Bill Stiernberg) (click for larger size images)

Alys is the top hunter of the Hunter’s Guild. Her exploits have earned her the nickname “The Eight Strokes Warrior,” or even “Alys the Dismemberer.” While appearing cold and indifferent to strangers, She is highly regarded by people who are more familiar with her.

Alys fights with, yes, indeed.. high tech BOOMERANGS. If that’s not awesome. If that’s not awesome.. what is awesome. Really.

And now we have some pretty funny CSTW fan art drawn up and sent to me by LittleEiko87 on DeviantArt:

Cthulhu's Family (by LittleEiko87 on DA) (click for larger images)

This is her “alternate ending” for the game, haha.  She did a great job capturing the characters and their respective looks.  Although, my favorite part is probably the terrified Paws.  Or maybe the Deep One doll the daughter is holding.  Good attention to detail!  😛

Today I’m also going to post an animated GIF of the Dude on a Walrus.  This is by far the fan favorite enemy in Rainslick3.  Which is why I drew this.

But I got a request for a GIF of the enemy to use as a forum avatar, so here it is:

I’ll post a larger one as well:

Thanks for checking it out the art this week!  Feel free to send me any fan art you’ve done and I’ll post it :) Send me requests in the comments or via twitter (below) as well if you like!

OK back to work on Rainslick4.

Hello, Bill Stiernberg here, welcome back to the weekly Art Article!  In case you missed previous articles, you can sort zeboyd.com by “Art” via the tab above under Categories, or visit this link at any time: http://zeboyd.com/category/art/

This week I’m posting some really cool CSTW fan art created by we.are.the.armada:

Cthulhu Saves the World - by we.are.the.armada

Cthulhu Saves the World – by we.are.the.armada

You can heck out his other art on tumblr here:

http://wearethearmada.tumblr.com/

I really like this CSTW piece. I like the “sketchy” quality of it, it gives it a distinct style. I also like the way he’s done the characters’ faces; it’s got more realistic proportions but still uses forms and lines well.
Cthulhu looks awesome and kind of intimidating! And paws looks almost regal, as I’m sure he would prefer. Not being a kitty and all..

I also decided to draw some PA related stuff, since we at zeboyd are currently in the thick of building Rainslick4.

Dr. Blood

Dr. Blood

So Penny Arcade hasn’t done a comic featuring Dr. Blood in a while, and Gabe’s (Mike Krahulik’s) art has improved and changed a lot in the past many years. So I attempted drawing Dr. Blood in such a way that I thought might somewhat befit a modern Penny Arcadish-esque style, as opposed to the way Dr. Blood was originally drawn in one of the older styles. Mike Krahulik is extremely talented and he would certainly draw this character differently, and better, and with more flair, but I hope that maybe I did an okay job trying to envision the character in a newer-ish style.

Thanks for checking it out the art this week!  Feel free to send me any fan art you’ve done and I’ll post it 🙂

OK back to work on Rainslick4.

Hello, Bill Stiernberg here, welcome to a Day-Early Weekly Art article!

It’s a day early because we’re posting some more interesting news about Rainslick4 tomorrow. SO CHECK BACK.

Speaking-of, I’ve been working my arse off on Rainslick4’s maps, sprites, etc etc.  So this week I only had a chance to draw one thing.

Since drawing that Ni No Kuni fan art I felt like it’d be fun to take a western RPG character and draw her up in a similar style.  Somehow I landed on drawing Femshep.

Cartoony Femshep! (Bill Stiernberg)

I took a bunch of responses on my twitter about what character to draw for next week.  Will probably be either from Phantasy Star or a Tales game.

Thanks for checking it out!  Back to work on Rainslick4.

Zeboyd Weekly Art! (2/13/13): Ni No Kuni, and October (Art Trade!)

Art  Comments Off on Zeboyd Weekly Art! (2/13/13): Ni No Kuni, and October (Art Trade!)
Feb 132013

Hey everyone!  Bill Stiernberg here.

This week I received the other half of the art trade I did with fyrefoxz of Shadowdawn:  his rendition of October from CSTW.

I also really wanted to do something with a clean art style, so I chose to do some fan art of the pretty-popular game, Ni No Kuni:

Ni No Kuni: Oliver + Drippy Off to Adventure! (Bill Stiernberg)

Ni No Kuni: Oliver + Drippy Off to Adventure! (Bill Stiernberg)

Ni no Kuni is a PS3  (and Nintendo DS in Japan) RPG that revolves around thirteen-year-old Oliver, who faces sudden tragedy in his life. As Oliver cries, his tears cause his doll to reveal itself as a fairy creature named Drippy. He gives Oliver a book that allows him to use magic and enter “Ni no Kuni,” a world parallel to Oliver’s reality.

This is a really beautiful RPG for the PS3. The PS3 version recently got a release in the US, to much acclaim. The game is by Level 5 and Studio Ghibli, a pretty great combination of companies to produce a great playing and looking RPG. It’s a wonderful game if you enjoy fairly traditional JRPGs.

Gotta love that Studio Ghibli style they have going on. So it was fun to draw, hope you like it!  Click on the pic for a bigger version or link to download.

So last week I posted an art trade I did with fyrefoxz.  I drew up a character, Arashi, from his forthcoming game Shadowdawn Genesis.

This week, he sent me his part of the trade:  October from CSTW!  October’s a pretty popular character from that game, and fyrefoxz’s pic is nicely done:

October from CSTW (fyrefoxz on DA)

October from CSTW (fyrefoxz on DA)

I like the color and lighting he chose for this, and he got all the details right.  Great work 🙂

He also posted a version without the background for those curious here.

And of course you can download the higher res version from the DA page from the download link here.

All right, hope you enjoyed this week’s art post.  I’m going to look into doing some more clean art style type stuff as well as some other painting techniques.  We’ll see!

Hi everyone!  Bill Stiernberg here.

I’m getting into an increasing state of crunch mode on building maps for RS4, but I want to keep this weekly article going.  So this week I did my half of an Art Trade – which is where I draw someone else’s character, and they draw a Zeboyd character.  So I drew a fellow RPG dev’s character, Arashi Kageyama from the in-development game, Shadowdawn Genesis.

Arashi, Shadowdawn Genesis (pic by Bill Stiernberg)

Arashi, Shadowdawn Genesis (pic by Bill Stiernberg)

This is fyrefoxz’s original character, Arashi, who he designed for the game he is working on, called Shadowdawn Genesis. It’s a cool looking action RPG that’s been in the works for a while, although there’s no firm release date yet.

Character info:

Arashi is a shy but proud girl who took up sword training in the care of an imperial family. After being ambushed by a militant group, a mysterious razorcat rescued her. She and the cat, Ket, become friends and go about their adventures together!

The game looks very cool, hope to see it get completed soon – also looking forward to see what Fox draws up for me!

OK so last week I posted a “process” animation showing the steps I took to make the pic.

Since some people found it useful, I decided to do a more detailed process animation so you can see it more slowly / step by step, and see how I corrected some screwups:

Arashi Process Anim (Bill Stiernberg)

This one is longer than the one from last week, showing more steps. It also shows how I fixed some of my screwups along the way.

Hope you enjoy it and/or find it useful!

Hey Everyone!

So this week I am pretty  busy making RS4’s maps, so I only had time to draw 1 pic for today.  But in addition to that, I decided to post a short “process” animation showing the steps I took to make it.

Estelle Bright, Trails in the Sky

Estelle Bright, Trails in the Sky (Bill Stiernberg)

Estelle is a rather naive and straightforward girl who is always energetic and positive. She is very boyish in appearance and attitude, and has a “hit first and ask later” attitude. When Estelle was six, her mother was killed in a war; his traumatizing event inspired Estelle to become a Bracer, as she chooses to be brave and courageous like her mother.

So this week I wasn’t sure who to draw. I was going to default to doing another Persona character, but then someone (Robert, that is)  suggested doing Estelle from Trails in the Sky, an Xseed published Falcom RPG for the PSP.

I don’t know a whole lot about the game other than that, and that it got really solid review scores! Should check it out.  Gotta love Xseed for bringing awesome stuff like this over!

So since I haven’t had a lot of spare time to do art this past week (Been making game maps, yay!) I decided to put together a short animation showing the steps I took to draw this picture:

Estelle Fan Art - Process (Bill Stiernberg)

Estelle Fan Art - Process (Bill Stiernberg)

It has GIF artifacty-ness but that’s okay, it shows the steps well enough!

Steps were:

1.  Rough “pose” sketch

2.  Rough body sketch

3.  Rough detail sketch

4.  Remove blue lines

5.  Full detail sketch

6.  fade for inking

7.  Ink

8.  Remove sketch

9. Base colors

10.  Shadows

11.  Highlights

12.  Background

13.  Light effects

14.  Clean-up

15.  Big light effect

16.  add signature

There are probably faster or better ways to do this, but it’s my current method!

I hope you found it interesting!

See you next week,

-Bill Stiernberg (bill_at_zeboyd on twitter.  Deviantart page.)

Zeboyd Weekly Art! (1/23/13): Rise Kujikawa (Persona4), Mondo Zappa (Killer is Dead)

Art  Comments Off on Zeboyd Weekly Art! (1/23/13): Rise Kujikawa (Persona4), Mondo Zappa (Killer is Dead)
Jan 232013

Hey everyone!  Bill Stiernberg / bill_at_zeboyd here for this week’s Art Column!

This week I decided to draw some Persona 4 art – Rise Kujikawa, and some fan art of Grasshopper Manufacture/Suda51’s upcoming game Killer is Dead.

See, I’m a big fighting game fan (love Arc Sys), and I’ve been playing Persona 4 Arena lately.

Since I have yet to play Persona4, I found all the characters in the fighter really cool and interesting.  I like the look of many of them.  So I decided to do some Persona 4 art first!

Rise Kujikawa, Persona 4 (Bill Stiernberg)

Rise Kujikawa, Persona 4 (Bill Stiernberg) - Click for High Resolution

Rise is cheerful, outspoken, bubbly, and can be quite boastful. She used to be an idol but she quit to work at her family business (citing health reasons). She is stressed out, and tired of show business because she doesn’t know if the Rise that everyone admires is the ‘real’ Rise, or the persona of Risette that she presents to the masses.

So then I wanted to do more Persona 4 fan art, and I was thiiiiis close to drawing Yu Narukami because he’s the “leader” in Persona4 and he’s got an awesome sword.

Then I saw the new screenshots for Suda51’s new upcoming game, Killer is Dead.  I’m a fairly big Suda51 fan; not all of his games are fantastically amazing, but I love his style and he consistently brings crazy unique stuff to the table.  He’s most notable for No More Heroes 1 and 2 (Wii), Killer7 (GameCube, PS2), Shadows of the Damned (PS3,360), Sine Mora (PS3, 360, PC, Vita), and Lollipop Chainsaw (PS3, 360) but has several other games.

Since I was going to draw a man in a suit with a katana, and then I saw the new screenshots of this game, I decided to go with it:

Mondo Zappa, Killer is Dead (Bill Stiernberg)

Mondo Zappa, Killer is Dead (Bill Stiernberg) - Click for High Resolution

Killer is Dead puts you in the bloody shoes of Mondo Zappa, a 35-year-old man suddenly recruited to the Brian Execution Firm. The firm — run by the retired, half-cyborg Brian Roses — sends Mondo around the world to kill other assassins. Mondo wakes up one day to find one of his hands has been embedded with an upgradeable gun.

The game is supposed to come out later this year. Mondo Zappa (awesome name, right?) is the main character. Cyborg assassin with katana. Love Suda51.

Hope you enjoyed this week’s art article!  Let me know if you have requests and I might do ’em!

Zeboyd Weekly Art! (1/16/13): Teddie!, Toejam & Earl

Jan 162013

Hey everyone!

So this week I’m posting a couple of fan arts I did the past few days.  One is of Teddie from Persona 4 and one is from ToeJam & Earl.

TEDDIE! Persona 4 (Bill Stiernberg)

TEDDIE! Persona 4 (Bill Stiernberg)

Teddie! A cute goofball character from Persona 4.

A comic relief character, Teddie is seen flirting with the girls of the Investigation Team at numerous occasions, but fails every time.  Otherwise, he is bubbly and cute and is known to cheer up the mood when investigating the case.

The past weekend I was playing ToeJam & Earl 2, and it’s pretty fun and funky, so I drew those characters (see below).  Afterwards I wanted to do something more RPG-centric, and I’d been wanting to do some Persona 4 fanart for a while.

So I googled “favorite Persona character.”  I found a thread on some forum where people listed their favorite and least favorite Persona characters.  Teddie was, for whatever reason, listed quite a lot as least-favorite!  But why!  He’s so cute!  Anyway that sealed the deal and so I drew Teddie.  I’ll do another Persona pic down the line of a “real” Persona character.

ToeJam & Earl: Jammin' (Bill Stiernberg)

ToeJam & Earl: Jammin' (Bill Stiernberg)

ToeJam & Earl!

These guys are awesome. Alien rappers who crashland on Earth and have to escape back to their home planet of Funkotron? Simply amazing.

So like I said, I played this the other weekend, and it’s quite fun. The sequel I mean. The first TJ&E is some kind of roguelike, with randomly generated levels that look nothing like Earth.  More like floating islands with everything from hula dancers to waddling imp demons chasing you around. It was… meh.

The sequel, Panic on Funkotron, now that game is fun! It’s a great two-player cooperative platformer where you have to find and catch the humans that escaped onto Funkotron with you so you can send them back to earth. I recommend checking it out for the wackiness of it, the humor, and the funktastic soundtrack.

OK hope you like the art for today. I’ll maybe do more “serious” character(s) next week.  We’ll see!
